TO TEN COMMON INTERIOR REDESIGN QUESTIONS

IF you follow my blogs, you know that I just researched some very reputable websites on how to best paint kitchen cabinets and I shared that information in my September blog.

I am ready now to unload the contents of my cabinets, and prep the kitchen for sanding dust and paint drips BUT do I really want a deconstructed ktichen when I just invited relatives to the house for Thanksgiving dinner? I’d only have about four weekends to paint a boat-load of cabinets. I have no idea how much time this is going to take.

I’ll start after Thanksgiving or maybe even after Christmas. I’m not procrastinating, I promise. I’d have five solid months of uninterrupted weekends before the house gets active again for summer. So I think that’s a better plan.

Until then, for the next three months I will share “Answers to Ten Common Interior Redesign Questions.” I just presented this information to a women’s group and I think they found it really informative so maybe it will be of value to you as well. Here we go.

1. Can I mix wood tones?

Yes! Contrast adds interest and depth to a room.

First pick a dominant wood tone as your starting point. If you don’t have wood floors, pick the largest furniture piece. Then add other pieces that match the undertone (warm, cool or neutral), finish (matte, satin, or glossy), and/or wood grain (fine or coarse) of your dominant wood tone. Matching one or all of these helps to create continuity.

2. How high do I hang my art?

For maximum impact, an eye-level display should be your rule of thumb. For the average person, this would be 60 inches from the floor to the center of the art.

When hanging art over furniture, the space between the frame and furniture should be roughly four to six inches.

3. What rug size should I buy?

It’s optimal to buy a rug that is large enough for all the legs of your furniture to be on the rug but that can be expensive. A more economical alternative is to make sure that at least the front legs of your furniture sit comfortably on the rug. This anchors a conversational furniture arrangement.
